The first edition of Who's Who in Art was published in 1927 by Art Trade Press Ltd., the editor Bernard Dolmen stating that the art world was one of the last big professions to possess its own "Who's Who", adding 'This protracted deficiency in art literature is to some extent attributable to the constitution of art itself; the "artistic temperament" for instance, is certainly not one that is adapted to the careful composition of precise biographical information, to its arrangement in specified sections in a large and perhaps bewildering form, and to its subsequent delivery into the publishers' hands by a given date...'.
Although the first edition was confined only to the fine arts, over the years the publication has expanded to include a much wider variety of media and crafts. Then, as now, we welcome recommendations from artists, galleries, collectors and critics alike, and will consider every application carefully. Entries are entirely on merit as they have been since the first edition almost ninety years ago. If you have any suggestions, please contact us.
